Last year, I embarked on a journey into the world of Dungeons & Dragons alongside my partner and a few friends. We utilized Baldur's Gate 3 to bring our characters to life, and I crafted a drow rogue named Eld, diving deep into the persona of a fallen noble navigating the challenges of the surface world.
Our campaign was progressing beautifully, and Eld was evolving into a character I cherished. Unfortunately, life intervened, halting our sessions for a time. During this break, a group of friends expressed their desire to venture into D&D for the first time, which unexpectedly placed me in the role of dungeon master.
It had been years since I last took on that responsibility—back in middle school, where we were more chaotic than coherent in our gameplay.
As a result, my opportunities to embody the beloved drow rogue diminished. I managed to incorporate him as a non-playable character in our current adventure, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, but while it was entertaining to introduce this enigmatic rogue into the mix, I yearned to experience his own stories once more.
Recently, with the launch of Neverwinter's Dragonslayer module, my interest in Cryptic's D&D MMO was reignited. To be frank, Dungeons & Dragons Online never captivated me, as I was engrossed in its counterpart, Lord of the Rings Online, during its peak. Although Neverwinter debuted nine years ago, I only began playing it in 2015 when it became available on Xbox One. However, my attention shifted to The Elder Scrolls Online, leading me to set Neverwinter aside until now.
This month marked my return to the game. Although my original character was on Xbox, I felt compelled to experience Neverwinter on my PC this time. The allure of unlocked framerates and the opportunity to utilize my impressive BenQ Mobiuz ultrawide monitor played a significant role in this decision, along with the chance to test its compatibility with the Steam Deck.
Starting fresh, I left behind my original character from the Xbox and decided to create a new avatar on PC. Naturally, I crafted a drow rogue named Eld, distinguished by his noble appearance and mischievous tendencies. It seems that whenever I dive into a D&D-related game, this sly character will be my go-to, whether we stick to the classic Forgotten Realms or explore the vast realms of Magic: The Gathering.
Revisiting the realm of Neverwinter has been an exhilarating experience so far. While I wish for the freedom to roam the city itself, the Protector's Enclave serves as a vibrant and lively hub that feels alive. From there, I eagerly plunged into quests in the nearby graveyard, excited to hone my skills and understand the mechanics better.
It's fascinating to realize that numerous RPGs have employed variations of the classic dice-roll combat system that D&D pioneered. I was particularly keen to see how the turn-based combat from the source material would adapt to Neverwinter's more dynamic action-oriented gameplay.
Fortunately, Cryptic has masterfully fused elements from both styles. The at-will attacks effectively dismantle the undead, and the encounter skills are a joy to execute. I’m especially fond of the "Path of the Blades," which conjures knives from the ground, striking my foes with surprising flair.
While it may lack the strategic depth found in other renowned D&D titles like Baldur's Gate 3, Neverwinter successfully captures the essence of tabletop combat within the MMO framework. I’m eager to delve deeper and discover how teamwork influences combat in dungeons and future modules.
During my adventures in the graveyard, I took down numerous undead foes, thwarted a red wizard's plans, and more. I particularly enjoyed the twist on the classic lich quest, where instead of destroying a phylactery, we assisted the lich in finding his final resting place, allowing him to escape his unlife.
Although it’s still early days, I’m excited about the prospect of dragon hunting in the near future. This free-to-play MMORPG has certainly captivated me, offering a refreshing change from the other MMOs I've tried recently. Plus, it satisfies my desire to develop my drow rogue's backstory for our next tabletop session. I look forward to sharing tales of my undead encounters and helping a lich find peace over drinks at the Yawning Portal. More adventures await my character, Eld, and I can’t wait to dive in!
